Advice on Selecting Courses

GOODMORNING, folks :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Do I have to take a fourth year of math or can I start a second foreign language instead, which is what I really want to do?”

“I’d like to write for our community newspaper next year, but that means I won’t have time for an AP Chemistry class. Will that hurt my chances of getting in?”

Many high school sophomores and juniors (and their parents) want to know what courses to take to improve their chances for admission to Yale and other highly competitive colleges. With the caveat that every situation is different, here is some advice to help guide you as you make these decisions.

A Holistic Approach to Admissions

The high school transcript is almost always the most important document in a student’s application. But it is hard to conceive of a situation in which the appearance (or absence) of any one particular class on a transcript would determine the applicant’s outcome. The admissions committee does not make its decisions based on a piecemeal review of an applicant’s recommendations, test scores, activities, or individual elements of a high school transcript. It considers each application as a comprehensive picture of that student.

When the admissions committee looks at your transcript, it will not focus on whether you have taken any specific course. It will be far more interested to see that you have challenged yourself with difficult coursework, and have done well.

Trajectories & Trends

Trends are important. Remember, the admissions committee is primarily concerned with what kind of Yale student you will be. So it is very important that we see a high level (or an improving degree) of rigor and success throughout your high school years. This includes your senior year. If you wish to make your application among the most competitive, you must take a challenging senior program and continue to excel in it. Senior year is not the time to take a light course load. Do not catch “senioritis!” The admissions committee will check an applicant’s senior year program and performance before offering admission.

Remember that we are looking for students who will make the most of Yale and the most of their talents. Knowing how you have engaged in high school gives us an idea of how you might engage at Yale. If you push yourself to excel all the way through your senior year and beyond, we take that to be a good sign that you will do the same at Yale. And that is the type of student we welcome.

Context, Context, Context

Does your school offer AP courses? An International Baccalaureate program? Both? Neither? We know you did not design your school’s curriculum, and we only expect you to take advantage of such courses if your high school provides them. Different schools have different requirements that may restrict what courses you can take. Again, we only expect that you will excel in the opportunities to which you have access.

Balance

Yale does not have any specific entrance requirements (for example, there is no foreign language requirement for admission to Yale). But we do look for students who have taken a balanced set of the rigorous classes available to them. Generally speaking, you should try to take courses each year in English, science, math, the social sciences, and foreign language.

We encourage you to pursue your intellectual interests, so long as it is not at the expense of your program’s overall rigor or your preparedness for college. Be honest with yourself when you are deciding between different courses. Are you choosing a particular course because you are truly excited about it and the challenge it presents, or are you also motivated by a desire to avoid a different academic subject?

You should also bear in mind that many other selective colleges do have minimum course requirements for entering students. It is best to research each school individually.

Ask Yourself These Questions

When weighing your course selection for the upcoming year, here are a few things to consider:

  1. Am I taking a well-balanced academic program that will provide me with a good foundation for college?
  2. Am I prepared to take college-level math, writing, and science courses?
  3. Do I feel challenged by the courses that I am taking?
  4. Are my courses among the more rigorous ones available to me at my school?
  5. Am I seeking challenge or avoiding it?
  6. Overall, is my four-year high school program among the most challenging programs available at my school?

It is wise to first consult your teachers and high school counselor on what courses are most appropriate for you at your high school. You will doubtless have to make some difficult decisions about which courses to take and how to balance your schoolwork and your extracurricular pursuits. We hope that this advice helps inform you as you make those decisions.

Activity #2: MACIPRISA MEET

"Malolos City Private Schools Association"

Do's and Don'ts for Students

This is most likely what will happen if you are totally bored to death -____-

So I was just browsing around and look what I've found! *drum roll effect* Tada!!! Do's and Don'ts for us students!

O.O

Whoa, jeez! Hold your nerf guns! I'm not trying to be bossy here or anything, I just wanna try random posting in this blog so yeah... here they are! ;D

DO'S
  •   Come to school well groomed, in proper uniform with well polished shoes.
  •   Be regular in attendance and never be late to school.
  •   Attend Morning Assembly without fail.
  •   Bring the student diary to school daily.
  •   Keep your class room and school premises clean and tidy.
  •   Turn off the tap after use.
  •   Switch off fans and lights when not in use.
  •   Be fair and honest at work, always be considerate of the rights of others.
  •   Be courteous and respectful to parents, teachers and elders.

DON'TS

    •   Do not lend or borrow money or any other precious article.
    •   Do not involve yourself in feuds.
    •   Do not bunk classes.
    •   Do not use abusive language.
    •   Do not damage the school property.
    •   Do not bring gadgets, such as, mobile phones, iPods, MP3s etc. They are strictly prohibited in the school premises.
    •   Do not bring articles of value like jewellery to school. The school will not be held responsible for the loss of such articles.
    •   Do not absent yourself from school. 75% attendance is the minimum requirement. Presence in the school is mandatory except in cases of emergency.
    •   Do not make loud noise or create confusion in the class room, auditorium or elsewhere in the school building.

Have you read all of it? SURE? >:) Mehehe, just kidding. I might say, all of these are actually true (duh, of course) Okay, I think I'm going insane again. Please excuse myself (_ _ )

Anyways about these "do's and don'ts", may I suggest we all follow the DO's okay? I repeat, follow the DO's instead of the DON'Ts. If you want your high school life to be peaceful and trouble-free, these are the keys, believe me, I know. Lol, SIRIUS-ly speaking here.

Oh and just a little reminder to you guys out there, when choosing a path towards something in life, it's really up to yourselves, it's your decisions that will mostly affect your whole being, not your family, friends, other people, but YOU. In other words, it's better to look before you leap. Okay? :)

Okay then, that would be all for tonight! See ya' around folks! *flying kiss to everyone*

    High school? @.@

    A,B,C,D....

Pero teka, ano ba ang high school?

After our elementary graduation, excited kami na medyo kinakabahan. First time eh.

New school, new people, new books, new lessons, new surroundings, NEW LIFE.

-Mga bagong subjects na makakadaupang palad (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, World History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
    -mga unfamiliar terms na maririnig.
-mga unexpected and at the same time, exciting moments, etc.

Agree? Well, para sa'min, cympre! Bakit? Kasi sa high school life, diyan mo mararanasan ang lahat ng first times (first love, first crush, first sleep over, first gala, first line of seven sa card, first period at kung ano-ano pang mga first time yan!) Oh, diba? But on the contrary, complicated rin ang pagiging isang high school student. It serves as a stepping stone for college life, a preparation, para pagdating ng college, ready na tayo to dwell in the real world.

'Yan ang high school life para sa amin. Kahit 4 na taon lang kaming magkakasama-sama, feeling namin di makukumpleto ang buhay namin kung hindi dahil sa 4 na taon na yan. Oo, alam naming kaunting panahon lang yan, pero kahit aapat lang yan, those will always serve as one of the unforgettable memories in our book of life :)

here is a picture of our whole class...

    IV-Virgo Class of 2012-2013

    ===========
We made this blog with the sole purpose of being able to relate to you our own stories, experiences and moments of what high school is really all about. Malay mo, maka relate ka, diba? So just feel free to visit this site anytime you want! Just make sure lang na tapos ka na sa mga homeworks and other school activities ha? See ya' around! :*

    Massive thank you and lovelots,
